“My calling is in family court and it’s my opportunity to try to make the best of bad circumstances. I am constantly encountering people and families who are going through the worst times of their lives and as a judge, I am called upon to know the law and to help them resolve their issues,” says Judge Robin Robinson.

From her profound experience in community service to her position as District Court Judge, Judge Robinson has served a life dedicated to helping her community and empowering women. Beginning her legal career in private practice and later forming her own firm, Judge Robinson found her niche as a litigator and began to gravitate toward family law, providing legal representation to thousands of New Hanover residents. She spent over 10 years serving women and underprivileged communities, demonstrating remarkable litigation skills and compassion for people facing the most difficult issues like divorce, child support, custody, alimony, and property distribution. In 2002, Judge Robinson became one of only two certified family law specialists in the Fifth Judicial District, the only woman certified, and one of only eight women certified in eastern North Carolina. Judge Robinson demonstrates leadership by encouraging the participation of women in the legal profession, advocating for the rights of women under the law, and advancing the cause of equal justice. Since 2010, she has served on the North Carolina Council for Women Advisory Board, working alongside other women across the state to advise the Governor, the principal State departments, and the State legislature on issues impacting women in North Carolina by raising awareness of the impact of violence against women and directing available resources to serve victims in communities across the state.

Judge Robinson’s legal skills, qualifications as a family law specialist, and commitment to ensuring that all people have equal access to justice led her to seek a position as a District Court Judge for the Fifth Judicial District. She was appointed by Governor Beverly Purdue in 2011 and has been overwhelmingly re-elected since then. Judge Robinson serves as a Family Court Judge, DWI and Drug Treatment Judge, and presides over Juvenile Court and other District court cases like domestic violence, child support, and mental health, which she says “affect the very livelihoods of people on a daily basis.” In her position, Judge Robinson believes that every person appearing before the court should be heard, treated fairly, and be respected. When asked about her ultimate goal as she presides over the courtroom, she says “I am motivated to do what is right and serve the ends of justice, benefit the community, and advance the interests of everyone affected by my ruling.”
