Governor Roy Cooper ordered all U.S. and North Carolina flags at state facilities to half-staff immediately until sunset Wednesday, Jan. 3 in honor of Greensboro Police Sergeant Philip Dale Nix who died in the line of duty on Saturday, Dec. 30.
Sergeant Nix was off duty when he witnessed a crime and confronted the suspects at the Sheetz on Sandy Ridge Road west of Greensboro. Another off-duty Greensboro Police officer and Guilford County paramedic immediately rendered aid, but Nix later died at a local medical facility.
Sergeant Nix had served with the Greensboro Police Department since 2001.
