FLAG ALERT: Lowering of the US and NC Flags to Half-Staff Honoring the Victims of the Attack in Kabul, Afghanistan

Governor Roy Cooper ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state facilities to be lowered to half-staff immediately until sunset, Monday, August 30 to honor the U.S. servicemembers and other victims who died in the terrorist attack on August 26 in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Statement from Governor Roy Cooper 

"August 26 was a tragic day for our country. Kristin and I are praying for the families of the servicemembers and civilians who lost their lives in Kabul."

FLAG ALERT: Lowering of the US and NC Flags to Half-Staff From Sunrise to Sunset on Monday, August 23 in Honor of US Marine Private First Class Henry E. Ellis

Governor Roy Cooper today ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state facilities to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Monday, August 23, 2021 in honor of US Marine Private First Class Henry E. Ellis and all those who have fought for our country overseas and never returned home. PFC Ellis was born in Salisbury, North Carolina, and first enlisted in the US Marine Corps Reserve in 1943 during World War II.

FLAG ALERT: Lowering of the US and NC Flags to Half-Staff in Honor of Mount Gilead Police Officer Craig Cloninger

Governor Roy Cooper today ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state facilities to be lowered to half-staff beginning today, August 18, 2021 until sunset Thursday, August 19, 2021 in honor of Mount Gilead Police Officer Craig Cloninger who passed away over the weekend while responding to a house fire. His career in law enforcement began in 2002 with the Richmond County Sheriff's Office and later with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office where he served as a school resource officer at East Montgomery High School.

Flag Alert: Lowering of the US and NC Flags to Half-Staff in Honor of NC House Rep. Jerry Carter

Governor Roy Cooper today ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state facilities to be lowered to half-staff beginning today, August 5, 2021 until sunset Saturday, August 7, 2021 in honor of NC House of Representative Jerry Carter, who passed away on Tuesday. Carter represented the 65th District of Rockingham County. He was in his second term in office. During his service, Carter was the chairman of the Family, Children and Aging Policy committee, and vice-chairman of the local government-land use, planning and development committee. Services for Rep.

Governor Cooper Declares June 14 as Flag Day

By official proclamation, Governor Roy Cooper declared June 14, 2021 as Flag Day. This national day of observance recognizes the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777 and pays homage to this symbol of democracy and freedom that serves as a beacon for all Americans.  All North Carolinians are encouraged to display the US flag to honor our country, history, servicemembers and veterans of the US Armed Forces.

Flag Alert: Lowering of the US and NC Flags to Half-Staff for Memorial Day

In tribute to the sacrifices of our armed services personnel, Governor Roy Cooper has ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state facilities be flown at half-staff on Monday, May 31 until 12 noon in honor of Memorial Day. 

Statement from Governor Cooper:

"I am profoundly grateful for those who have lost their lives in the line of duty protecting our country and our freedom. I salute them, their families, their friends and their comrades in arms as we take this day to reflect upon and appreciate their ultimate sacrifice for all of us."

Governor Roy Cooper has ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state facilities to be lowered immediately to half-staff until sunset on Sunday, May 30, 2021 honoring the victims of the tragedy in San Jose, California who lost their lives today to a senseless act of violence. In tribute to the lives lost and the families in mourning all North Carolinians are encouraged to join in lowering flags to half-staff in their honor. 

Flag Alert: Honoring National Armed Forces Day and National Peace Officers Memorial Day

On Saturday, please join us in honoring the many members of our military and law enforcement.  May 15th is National Armed Forces Day and National Peace Officers Memorial Day. 

National Armed Forces Day honors our service men and women of the military. Established in 1949, this special day celebrates our uniformed heroes each year on every 3rd Saturday of May.

Flag Update: Flags to Return to Full Staff Sunset, May 7, 2021

Services for Watauga County Sheriff Office's Sgt. Chris Ward and K-9 Deputy Logan Fox will be held at 3 pm today, May 6 at Appalachian State University Holmes Convocation Center. A private ceremony will also be held for Sgt. Ward on May 7.

FLAG ALERT: Lowering of US and NC Flags to Half-Staff April 30, 2021

Governor Roy Cooper has ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state facilities to be lowered immediately to half-staff in honor of Fort Bragg Spc. Abigail Jenks who passed away on April 19 during a training exercise. She was part of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division. Spc. Jenks day of interment is May 2. US flags are to remain lowered until sunset on Sunday.
